Obama pitches mortgage overhaul as housing rallies

Obama pitches mortgage overhaul as housing rallies

Buoyed by an improving housing market, President Barack Obama on Tuesday proposed a broad overhaul of the nations mortgage finance system, including winding down governmentbacked Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. He declared that taxpayers should never again be left holding the bag for the mortgage giants bad bets.

Obama outlined his proposals in Phoenix, the once foreclosureriddled city at the epicenter of the nations housing crisis. The housing market in Phoenix, as well as in many other parts of the country, has rebounded robustly, with prices in the southwestern city up 66 percent from the low point in 2011.

Despite the nationwide gains, the president said sweeping housing reforms are still needed to ensure that a rejuvenated market doesnt simply reinflate the housing bubble. The cornerstone of that effort is winding down Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, a proposal with bipartisan support in the Senate.

For too long, these companies were allowed to make big profits buying mortgages, knowing that if their bets went bad, taxpayers would be left holding the bag, Obama told a crowd of more than 2,000 at an area high school. He spoke following a tour of a construction company that has been able to hire hundreds of new workers as a result of the regions housing comeback.

While the president has previously endorsed overhauling Fannie and Freddie, his remarks Tuesday marked the first time he outlined his specific priorities for doing so.

The president wants to replace Fannie and Freddie with a system that would put the private sector, not the government, primarily at risk for loans. The government would still be involved, both in oversight and as a lastresort loan guarantor.

Obama is also seeking guarantees that a private sectorled mortgage finance system would still ensure wide homeowner access to popular 30year mortgages at fixed rates.

Making light of criticism from Republicans who have cast him as a bigspending liberal, Obama joked that his calls for deeper private sector involvement must sound confusing to the folks who call me a socialist.

Obamas mortgage reform priorities are largely in line with a Senate measure shepherded by Republican Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee and Democratic Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia. That legislation would wind down Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac within five years.

Once flourishing, Fannie and Freddie were bailed out in 2008 by a $187 billion taxpayerbacked bailout. The two enterprises dont make loans directly, but buy mortgages from lenders, package them as bonds, guarantee them against default and sell them to investors. mortgages and back nearly 90 percent of new ones.

Obamas trip to Phoenix marked the latest stop on a summertime tour aimed at rallying the public around his economic policies ahead of looming budget fights with congressional Republicans this fall. It was also a return to the city he visited just weeks after taking office in 2009 to tout the governments role in bolstering the housing market.

But some of Obamas housing proposals remain stalled in Congress, including sweeping refinancing legislation that would expand eligibility for homeowners who do not have governmentbacked mortgages. On Tuesday, he reiterated his calls for lawmakers to pass his refinancing proposals, saying they would help homeowners save thousands of dollars a year.

The president also tried to link his housing proposals to immigration reform, his top secondterm legislative priority. He argued that legal immigration would allow more people to purchase homes, thereby raising home values. White House officials also cited a study that showed immigrants accounted for 40 percent of new homeowners nationwide between 2000 and 2010.

The nationwide housing recovery has been providing critical support to the economy at a time when manufacturing and business investment have stagnated. Steady job growth and low mortgage rates in the past year have also fueled more home sales. The increased demand, along with a tight supply of homes for sale, has pushed home prices higher and encouraged builders to start more homes and create more construction jobs.

Seeking to highlight the broad impact of the housing market, Obama opened his stop in Phoenix with a tour of Erickson Construction, a company that makes building frames for homebuilders in three western states. The White House said the companys workforce has expanded from less than 100 employees at the depths of the recession to more than 580.

Just two years ago, the region was in the throes of the worst housing collapse in the country, with prices down nearly 60 percent from their June 2006 peak and banks foreclosing on 70,000 homeowners a year. While the current median home price remains below peak, the levels have risen 66 percent from September 2011. Buyers are plentiful and homes for sale scarce, leading to bidding wars for resale homes.

Sweden wont lastdays against Russia

Sweden wont last 2 days against Russia

Swedish Prosecution has accused the General of divulging state secrets.

The number of Swedes backing NATO entry has been declining ever since Gen. G told the local Svenska Dagbladet daily that Sweden had never been armed well enough to stand against the Soviet Union or Russia on its own. He stressed that in case of Russian threat Stockholm would require the help of the NATO or America. The General pointed out that Swedish politicians were standing in the way of the country militarization.

To add substance to his warning, Gen. G reminded the journalist about the 2008 RussianGeorgian war, which allegedly proved that European borders could be changed as a result of a military attack. The Commander also drew attention to Russia beefing up its Army under President Vladimir Putin, although he stressed that such an attack on Sweden was very unlikely.

For many people of the world the Bradley Manning case seems absurd and his persecution by the US Government something difficult to comprehend. He was something that the US government is afraid of, he was a soldier with a conscience who exposed war crimes being committed by US forces. The way the US has turned logic upside down by going after one who exposed crimes while protecting those who commit crimes should have the world up in arms. Only an illegal and illegitimate government would protect criminals while persecuting and even torturing a moral and upstanding brave individual who had the courage to stand up and blow the whistle on what he saw, rather than being rewarded and seen as a hero. Those protecting the criminals have decided to make Mr. Manning an example in order to throw fear into the hearts of anyone who would dare to expose their illegality.

The Children Rights Commissioner for the Russian President, Pavel Astakhov, asked the Federal Migration Service head to grant asylum for a daughter of a Russian woman who has escaped from her husband in Norway. The girl can be granted asylum in Russia as a minor needing protection, a lawyer, Roman Stepanov, said to the Voice of Russia. The girl and her mother are currently staying in transit zone of Moscow Sheremetyevo airport in much the same way as exCIA contractor and whistleblower Edward Snowden had for three weeks.

Fonterra, the world leading exporter of dairy products, is recalling a number of its milk products after a food poisoning scare. China, which is the major importer of milk powder from New Zealand was the first country to impose bans on Fonterra products. The Chinese decision was supported by Russia that has also put Fonterra deliveries on hold. Russian Federal Service for Supervision of Consumer Rights Protection and Human Welfare is now investigating whether contaminated products from New Zealand were imported to the markets. Professor of economy at the New School University Max Fraad Wolff talked with the Voice of Russia about the impact of Fronterraban on New Zealands market.

Keeping a killer dog in Britain may become a risky business. The government has come up with new sentencing proposals for dog owners whose pets attack people in public venues. The options for the owner of a dog which injures a person or an assistance dog could range from a tenyear prison terms to a life behind bars. At present, the maximum sentence is two years in jail. Mr Dave Joyce, the National Health, Safety Environment Officer at The Communication Workers Union, talked with the Voice of Russia about the new policy.

Stay Sexy Your Entire Life

Stay Sexy Your Entire Life

Research clearly shows that sex after 60 can actually be better than ever. Enjoyment can increase as partners continue to share love, life, fun, and intimacy throughout the years.

A recent poll of 6,000 men and women over the age of 60 reported that 37 percent still had sex at least once a week.

Married men in their 60s claim that they experience deeper sexual satisfaction than when they were 20 and single, while older married women admit that they are sexually happier than when they were younger provided they have successfully dealt with the physical and emotional changes that accompany menopause.

Studies reveal that 62 percent of healthy men and 30 percent of healthy women between the ages of 80 and 102 still have sexual intercourse! Many older couples describe a satisfying sex life consisting of touching and caressing as forms of sexual expression and love toward one another, even if they don have intercourse.

The idea of having a full and rewarding sex life even until we 100! is, undoubtedly, appealing. Physicians, clinicians, and sex researchers know it is possible to ensure an active sex life, no matter how many birthdays we had.

Seven Simple Steps That Can Ensure Continued Sexual Satisfaction

1. Cultivate your very own irresistible aphrodisiacs. A vigorous and wellcaredfor body and a lively personality are two of the most powerful aphrodisiacs known to man and woman. Best of all, you can have them with you at all times if you want them. Imagine homegrown, everready aphrodisiacs. And they legal, too!

Staying healthy, fit, and vibrant not only makes us outwardly attractive and alluring to others, but helps us feel sexy, desirable, and confidant as well. That confidence creates energy, a seductive charisma guaranteed to awaken a partner sexual interest.

Naturally, the most obvious way to stay healthy and fit is to take care of yourself: don smoke, use alcohol moderately, control your blood pressure and weight, eat a wellbalanced diet, get regular exercise and adequate rest. And remember, regular checkup visits to your physician must be an essential part of your sexual fitness program.

Best of all, couples who work to stay healthy together enjoy the added benefit of building emotional closeness while they share a sport or fitness activity. Taking brisk walks together, for instance, gives couples an opportunity to talk, to share ideas and feelings, and to relax their nervous systems while giving two respiratory systems and happy hearts a healthy workout.

2. Think young, fun, and yes sexy. When you watch someone who is enthusiastic, youthful, jovial, and having a good time, do you even notice how old that person is? Probably not. Most likely you just want to get to know that person and be part of the high spirits. And when you keep your attitude and behavior youthful and playful, you be the person others are attracted to and want to know.

Often, youthful people who are over 50 feel guilty because they frequently think about sex the way they did when they were 20 years old. Surely, they fear, it must be nonsense for someone with graying hair and mature stature to have the lusty notions and urges of postadolescence. Don you believe it! You supposed to think about sex the same way you did when you were 20; you just might not think about it as often. Nonetheless, your personal approach to sex at 50 and beyond is supposed to be as titillating, erotic, and creative as it was when you were 25. Feel and be sexual without guilt! Loosen up and be inventive! Go ahead and have more fun than you did years ago. But always be responsible, of course.
